CHRISTMAS HOLIDAYS ARE COMING! WILL YOU BE READY?

- By Cheryl Scott

What does that mean to you? If it just means will I have my presents bought on time, my baking done and the house cleaning finished before the company arrives – then you need to stop reading!!

If it means that I have been very successful in sticking to my fitness routine and fueling myself properly and I don’t want to sabotage all my hard work just because the holidays have arrived, read on...

You don’t have to forget all you know and practice on a daily basis.  Some people are under the misconception that fit people are always depriving themselves and working excessively just to maintain their fitness levels.  Nothing could be further from the truth. It is not about depriving yourself and being a slave to the gym.

So over the holidays have a plan - How will I enjoy all the fun and not set my self back weeks?

Here are some easy tips to help you stay on track and enjoy this festive time:

    1.    If you know you are going out where there will be goodies and treats, plan your day, watch your caloric intake prior to and during that day. Make sure that you eat well. This is not the time to have cake for lunch every day prior to the event!

    2.    Exercise - make sure that if your caloric intake is higher that you stay on top of your fitness routine.  Try adding an extra walk in the fresh winter air.  Perhaps try cross country skiing, tobogganing, down hill skiing – take the time to enjoy winter activities. It will help to make you feel young!

    3.    Watch your alcohol intake.  Alcohol is full of calories without any nutritional value.  Doesn’t mean you cannot enjoy, but remember all things in moderation.

    4.    Lighten up – some people are especially sensitive to lack of sunlight. Since daylight is scarce during the winter months – holiday blues can be amplified. Try and get outside and enjoy the nice bright wintry days.

Remember what the holiday season is all about – spending time with family, friends – and just taking time for you.  Pamper yourself – turn out the excess noise, TV or radio – curl up in your favorite chair reflect on the past year - look to the New Year with great anticipation for all the new adventures and potential it will bring. Read a good book – take time for you.

AND REMEMBER:

Tis the days before Christmas
And all through the land
The people are shopping and thinking life’s grand

Our season begins with numerous get togethers
With family, friends, co-workers and others
We vow to ourselves – we’ll be good and stay out of the treats
But we soon learn the hard way –
How much we love our sweets

So let me remind you
From your friends at the YW
The season is short and really quite fun
Go on and try the things that you like
Nothings forbidden - nothings taboo
All in moderation – for me and for you
Remember
Life is to enjoy
With all that it brings
So make time for the things that make your heart sing!!
